Imagine a perfectly preserved medieval walled town with white-washed houses draped in purple bougainvillea, cobblestone streets lined with bookshops and artisan stores, and a castle that's now a luxury hotel. That's Óbidos — a fairy-tale village just one hour north of Lisbon that feels like stepping into a storybook.
Getting to Óbidos
From Lisbon: Buses from Campo Grande station run hourly (1 hour, €8). By car, it's an easy 80 km drive north on the A8 motorway. Coming from the north, Óbidos is between Nazaré (30 min) and Lisbon.
Walking the Medieval Walls
The best introduction to Óbidos is walking along the top of its medieval fortress walls. The narrow stone walkway circles the entire town, offering bird's-eye views of the red-roofed houses, the castle keep, church towers, and the green countryside beyond. Note: there are no railings in many sections — it's an authentic medieval experience in every sense!
Rua Direita — The Main Street
The Rua Direita runs from the main gate (Porta da Vila, with its stunning azulejo-covered interior) to the castle. This charming cobblestone street is lined with artisan shops, local crafts, ceramic stores, and the famous ginjinha bars — tiny establishments serving sour cherry liqueur in edible chocolate cups.
Igreja de Santa Maria
The main church on the town square features a beautifully tiled interior — 17th-century blue and white azulejo tiles covering the walls from floor to ceiling. The Renaissance paintings by Josefa de Óbidos (one of Portugal's most important female artists) are a highlight.
Festivals & Events
- Medieval Market (July) — the town transforms into a medieval fair with jousting, fire-eaters, troubadours, and feasts eaten with hands
- Chocolate Festival (March/April) — two weeks of chocolate sculptures, workshops, and tastings
- Christmas Village (December) — Óbidos becomes a magical Christmas market inside the walls, with ice skating, concerts, and mulled wine
- International Literary Festival — Óbidos is a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, with bookshops in former churches and wine cellars
